According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Oscar-winning actor is in talks to play Mysterio, a foe fans have long hoped to see make the jump to live-action.
One of the wall-crawler’s earliest foes, Mysterio was introduced in 1964 by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in The Amazing Spider-Man #13 as a special-effects wizard and stuntman whose dreams of making it big in Hollywood end in failure. He instead turns his knowledge and skills to supervillainy, and later joins the Sinister Six. Mysterio possesses no superhuman abilities, relying on his expertise in illusions and special-effects devices.
A Mysterio movie was mentioned last year as part of Sony Pictures’ plans for its own Spider-Man cinematic universe, which will kick off this fall with Venom, and continue with Silver & Black, starring supporting players Silver Sable and Black Cat. It’s unknown how, or if, Gyllenhaal’s role in the Spider-Man sequel would play into those spinoff plans.
Tom Holland debuted as Peter Parker in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War as part of a co-production deal between Sony and Marvel Studios that led to Spider-Man: Homecoming, which successfully rebooted the franchise and grossed more than $880 million worldwide. Holland reprised his role for Avengers: Infinity War, and will (presumably) return next year for Avengers 4, which arrives in theaters just two months before the Spider-Man sequel.
